Torniamo alle nostre lezioni di Inglese, parlando di un argomento che spesso mette in difficoltà i miei giovani allievi.
AVVERBI ed ESPRESSIONI DI FREQUENZA : che cosa sono
Gli avverbi di frequenza sono particolari avverbi di tempo.
Essi indicano la frequenza con cui una determinata azione si svolge. Si differenziano dagli altri avverbi non tanto per la forma quanto per il modo in cui vengono utilizzati all’interno della frase.
Mentre in italiano gli avverbi non hanno una posizione fissa all’interno della frase, nella lingua inglese essi occupano una posizione specifica.
Quali sono gli avverbi e le espressioni di frequenza più usati?
Tra gli avverbi di frequenza troviamo:
- sempre, spesso, mai, raramente, poco, normalmente, frequentemente, presto, tardi.
- di solito, ogni tanto, ogni giorno, qualche volta, a volte, quasi mai
Sono inoltre molto usate anche le espressioni :
- di tanto in tanto, spesso e volentieri.
ESEMPI
Vediamo alcuni esempi dell’uso di questi avverbi ed espressioni in italiano. Tra parentesi vi indico il corrispondente inglese e in quale percentuale si ripete l’azione
- Non vado MAI in motocicletta. (NEVER) ⇒ 0% azione ripetuta
- QUASI MAI andiamo a dormire tardi. (hardly ever)
- Andiamo RARAMENTE al cinema. (rarely/seldom)
- OGNI TANTO mi piace andare in bicicletta. (occasionally)
- QUALCHE VOLTA leggo romanzi rosa. (sometimes)
- DI QUANDO IN QUANDO sentiamo qualche piccolo terremoto. (now and then)
- DI SOLITO sono io a fare la spesa. (usually)
- PER LO PIÙ trascorro le vacanze dai nonni. (mostly)
- NORMALMENTE al mattino mi alzo presto. (normally)
- Vado SPESSO all’estero. (often)
- In questa zona il vento soffia SOVENTE. (frequently)
- La domenica mattina QUASI SEMPRE dormo fino a tardi. (almost always)
- Vado SEMPRE al lavoro in macchina. (always) ⇒ 100 % azione ripetuta
Gli avverbi principali di frequenza, in realtà, sono SEI.
Essi differiscono in base al livello di frequenza, ovvero a seconda di quante volte ripetiamo una certa azione :
- always
- usually (o normally)
- often
- sometimes
- rarely o seldom
- never.
AVVERBI ed ESPRESSIONI DI FREQUENZA: dove posizionarli
Nella lingua inglese, gli avverbi di frequenza occupano una ben precisa posizione.
Per le FRASI AFFERMATIVE, vanno messi subito PRIMA DEL VERBO, di regola dopo il soggetto della frase:
SOGGETTO – AVVERBIO DI FREQUENZA – VERBO
- Michael NEVER eats vegetables.
- We RARELY go shopping.
- Mary SOMETIMES wears sunglasses.
ATTENZIONE:
se nella frase compare il verbo TO BE, gli avverbi di frequenza vanno DOPO il verbo.
- I am OFTEN late
- You are ALWAYS tired
Nelle FRASI NEGATIVE, gli avverbi di frequenza vanno messi DOPO doesn’t / don’t e PRIMA dell’infinito
- Joseph doesn’t OFTEN go to the cinema.
- I don’t USUALLY eat meat.
Allo stesso modo, nelle FRASI INTERROGATIVE, vanno posti DOPO do/ does e PRIMA dell’infinito
- What time do you usually have breakfast?
- Does he always drive so fast?
- Do they often play tennis?
Nelle risposte brevi, gli avverbi di frequenza precedono gli ausiliari:
- Do you often travel for business?
- Yes, I often do.
In pratica
-gli avverbi di frequenza vanno sempre PRIMA del verbo principale
- Do you ALWAYS go to work on foot? No, I USUALLY go by bus.
-seguono sempre TO BE o i verbi modali, come CAN o MUST
- I am OFTEN late
- You can ALWAYS help me with my homework
- We must ALWAYS do our best
-nei tempi composti seguono il primo ausiliare:
- Have you EVER been in France?
RICORDA:
Ever non ha valore negativo ed è usato in frasi affermative o interrogative
- Do you ever play football?
OSSERVAZIONE:
è possibile inserire sometimes e usually all’inizio di frase:
- Sometimes, she does her homework with me.
- Usually, they get up early.
Io preferisco però ricordare la regola standard :
- She sometimes does her homework with me
- They usually get up early
Altre espressioni di tempo
- in the morning / afternoon / evening (di mattina / di pomeriggio / di sera)
- at night (di notte)
- every day / evening / month (ogni giorno / sera / mese)
- once a week / a month (una volta alla settimana / al mese)
- twice a day / a year (due volte al giorno / all’anno)
- three / four times a … (tre / quattro volte al …)
- How long? (Quanto tempo …?)
- How often? (Quante volte …? / Con quale frequenza …?)

Ricorda che NEVER = MAI indica che non facciamo MAI una certa azione (0% di frequenza)
